PROBLEM

When applying UCD to sanitation, describe a problem your organization was trying to solve?

Toilets were not being purchased due to lack of affordability and the difficulty of selling toilets in co-owned plots or those with more than one owner/landlord

SOLUTION

What solution did you design to solve the problem?

  • Lower the deposit amount required so it's affordable
  • Introduce monthly fee for service model
  • Provide access to loans through MFIs

WHAT WORKED WELL

What part(s) of the UCD process did your organization do very well?

Tenants were able to afford monthly payments and therefore take ownership of sanitation

WHAT DIDN'T WORK

What part(s) of the UCD process did not go well?

  • Difficult in some plots for landlords to convince tenants to pay
  • Tenant turnover

TOOLS AND FRAMEWORKS

What UCD tools or analytical frameworks did you use?

  • One-on-one discussion with landlords and tenants
  • FGD sessions
  • Area mapping

WHAT WAS REALLY HARD

What were your biggest struggles?

Deciding what approach to use in gathering market insights given that there was previous research done in same area

BIGGEST A-HA

What was your biggest a-ha moment?

  • Tenants were willing to pay for sanitation
  • Shifting focus to include tenants not just landlords

MY PIVOTS

So then what? What did you do? Discard the idea? Change course?

  • Deep dive into tenant's behaviour/factors
  • Tenant turnover
  • Ability to organise:
    • local tenant
    • caretaker

TIPS

What advice would you give other organizations?

  • Focus on all stakeholders, understand their needs and preferences before developing a solution
  • Don't restrict yourself of what you think you know
